Erectile dysfunction after treatment of localised prostate cancer

Erectile dysfunction after treatment of localised prostate cancer
Prostate cancer is a malignant tumour of the prostate gland and is one of the most common cancers in older men. Several treatment options exist for localised prostate cancer. Two common options are radical prostatectomy and radiation therapy. These treatments can affect sexual function, and many men experience erectile dysfunction (ED) after treatment.
Why is prostate cancer treatment associated with erection problems?
The prostate gland sits just below the bladder and is surrounded by nerves and blood vessels that are important for achieving and maintaining an erection. A great deal of research has been done to understand the location of these structures and how to reduce damage during surgery or other treatments. Despite careful techniques, changes in erection quality are still common.
