Penile prosthesis surgery procedure

Penile prosthesis surgery procedure
Procedure:
For penile implant surgery, you will usually receive either general or spinal anaesthesia, as agreed by your anaesthetist and surgeon. A urinary catheter may be inserted during surgery and is typically removed the day after the procedure, depending on your doctor’s advice. Once you are under anaesthesia, the surgeon makes a small incision either above the penis or between the penis and the scrotum. This incision exposes the erectile chambers so that the surgeon can measure them and place a penile implant of an appropriate size in line with the product labelling and your anatomy. After the cylinders are placed, the reservoir is positioned behind the abdominal wall, and the pump is placed in the scrotum between the testicles to keep the system discreet. All components are then connected and the incision is sutured. The wounds are cleaned and a compressive bandage is applied. Some surgeons leave the penile implant partially inflated for a short period after surgery. In some cases, a drain is placed and later removed, depending on your clinical situation. Your healthcare team will discuss the potential benefits, risks, and complications of the procedure with you beforehand, and you will be asked to provide informed consent. As with any operation, there are risks such as infection, pain, device malfunction, and the possible need for revision surgery.
